Alex Hughes, the son of Wales football legend Mark Hughes, has died suddenly at the age of 38, leaving behind his wife and two young children. The announcement was made by his family on Saturday through the League Managers Association, prompting an outpouring of tributes from across the football world.

Family's Heartbreaking Statement

In a statement released by the League Managers Association, Mark Hughes and his wife Jill expressed their profound grief, saying they were "totally heartbroken" by the loss of their son. They described Alex as "a wonderful son, brother to Curtis and Xenna, devoted husband and father to Jessica and their two beautiful children Sebastian and Leonardo."

The family added: "Alex was Player Recruitment Lead at Grimsby Town FC, and had many good friends and colleagues. He will be so deeply missed by us all." They have requested privacy as they come to terms with their loss.

Grimsby Town's Tribute

Grimsby Town, the League Two club where Alex worked as Player Recruitment Lead since July 2025, issued a heartfelt tribute. Chairman Andrew Pettit said: "Everyone at Grimsby Town Football Club is shocked and saddened by the news of Alex’s passing. Our deepest sympathies go out to his family and loved ones at this incredibly difficult time. He will always be remembered as a valued member of the Mariners family who contributed so much during his time with us."

Chief executive Polly Bancroft added: "Alex was a much-loved and highly respected member of the Grimsby Town family. His professionalism, dedication and warmth made a lasting impact on everyone who worked with him. I thoroughly enjoyed working alongside Alex and will remember him not only as an outstanding colleague, but as a genuinely kind person who had a positive effect on those around him. He will be greatly missed across the Club and beyond."

Career in Football

Alex Hughes built a respected career behind the scenes in football after initially playing for the reserve sides of Stockport County and Wrexham. He transitioned into performance analysis and recruitment, holding positions with Blackburn Rovers, Manchester City, Fulham, AFC Fylde and Morecambe before joining Grimsby Town as Player Recruitment Lead in 2025. When Grimsby announced his appointment last summer, manager David Artell described him as the standout candidate from a recruitment process involving more than 100 applicants, praising his knowledge, experience and football pedigree.

Outpouring of Support

The tragedy has prompted an outpouring of support from across the football community for the Hughes family. Mark Hughes remains one of the most celebrated figures in Welsh football history, winning 72 caps for Wales and enjoying a distinguished playing career with Manchester United, Barcelona, Bayern Munich, Chelsea, Southampton, Everton and Blackburn Rovers before moving into management.
