A teenager has pleaded not guilty to a hate crime charge after allegedly making antisemitic comments in a video posted outside a mosque. Muhammed Rachid, 18, appeared at Snaresbrook Crown Court on Tuesday to deny causing racially aggravated harassment.
Details of the Charge
The charge stems from an incident in May, when a man reportedly shouted abuse towards the Jewish community while recording a video outside the East London Mosque in Whitechapel. The video was posted to social media and quickly went viral on X on May 15, prompting police attention.
According to the charge, Rachid allegedly “demonstrated towards another hostility based on his or her membership or presumed membership of a particular group.”
Court Proceedings
Rachid, a sports college student and part-time warehouse worker from Limehouse, east London, was granted conditional bail. He is scheduled to appear for a pre-trial hearing on June 15, 2027, with a two-day trial set for July 19, 2027, on the charge of causing racially aggravated harassment, alarm or distress with threatening or abusive words or behaviour.
Police Response to Antisemitism
The Metropolitan Police have intensified efforts to protect London’s Jewish communities following a series of arson attacks at Jewish sites in the two months prior to the incident. A dedicated team of 100 officers has been deployed to bolster patrols.
Metropolitan Police Commissioner Sir Mark Rowley previously warned of a growing “pandemic” of antisemitism in the UK, stating that 300 extra police officers were needed across London to address the issue.
