Cambridgeshire Police are studying CCTV footage after a three-year-old boy was reportedly thrown into a crocodile enclosure at a zoo in Cambridgeshire. The incident occurred at Johnsons of Old Hurst near Huntingdon on Thursday lunchtime.
Arrest and Investigation
A 30-year-old man from Norfolk was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder and later bailed. Police confirmed on Friday that he was deemed not fit for interview. Detectives from the Major Crime Unit are conducting further enquiries. On Sunday, The Times reported that police are assessing CCTV footage to decide whether to take further action.
Incident Details
Officers were called to the zoo at 1:24 pm on Thursday by the ambulance service after reports that a three-year-old boy had suffered serious injuries. It is understood he was attacked by at least one crocodile. The toddler received medical treatment at the scene before being rushed to Addenbrooke’s Hospital in Cambridgeshire, where he remains in a critical but stable condition.
Rescue Efforts
Andy Johnson, who runs the zoo, said his wife Tracey jumped into the enclosure to rescue the boy. Police confirmed the toddler was pulled out by staff. Andrew Johnson and their son Edward also jumped in to help. Chris Newman, director of the National Centre for Reptile Welfare, said: "We mustn't underestimate how much of a difference Tracey made. She was first in there. She jumped in and dealt with an awful situation. She was then joined by her husband and son. It was a team effort."
Police Statement
Detective Inspector Verity McCann confirmed that enquiries are ongoing. "Our thoughts remain with the boy, and his family and specialist officers continue to support them through this difficult time," they said.
