Tributes to woman who died in M62 wrong-way crash

A woman who died in a motorway crash after driving the wrong way on the M62 has been identified as a 'beloved philanthropist' and community champion. Sithandazile Sipepa, also known as Sithandazile Nkomo or Sitha, was killed in a collision on the eastbound carriageway between junctions 21 and 22 near Saddleworth on Saturday evening, July 11.

Crash details

Greater Manchester Police attended the scene after reports that a grey Nissan Juke had collided with a grey BMW X5. Officers stated they suspected the Nissan was 'travelling in the wrong direction' before the head-on impact. The Nissan driver sustained critical injuries and died at the scene. Occupants of the BMW received treatment for minor injuries. Images from the location showed the Nissan overturned on its roof.

Victim identified

The victim was identified as Sithandazile Nkomo by Greater Manchester Police. Zimbabwean publication Nehanda Radio confirmed that Sithandazile Sipepa, also known as Sithandazile Nkomo, perished in the incident. She founded the Sipepa Trust, a charitable organisation operating across Zimbabwe and the UK, coordinating numerous functions in Manchester.

Tributes from friends

Zimbabwean journalist and commentator Ezra Tshisa, who described her as a 'beloved philanthropist, community champion and dear friend', paid tribute on Facebook. 'For me, this is more than just another news story,' he wrote. 'Stha was my friend for decades, ever since we both arrived in the United Kingdom. She was like a sister to me.'

'Through the Sipepa Trust, she cared for countless widows, orphans and vulnerable families in Zimbabwe. Her generosity knew no boundaries, and her compassion transformed many lives.' Tshisa added that she was 'far more than a community leader' and 'passionately promoted Zimbabwean culture throughout the UK diaspora, ensuring younger generations remained connected to their roots and identity.'
