A man has appeared in court charged with the murder of a school headteacher after a crash in Trafford. Emergency services were called to reports of a collision involving a car and a cyclist on Paddock Lane, in Altrincham, at around 6.10pm on April 20. The cyclist tragically died at the scene. He has since been named as Michael Mullins, 56, who had been headteacher of Stretford Grammar School for 17 years.
Simon Richardson, 34, has been charged with murder, manslaughter, dangerous driving, failing to stop, and driving without insurance. At Manchester's Minshull Street Crown Court on Monday, June 15, Mr Richardson appeared over videolink, with members of Mr Mullin's family and Mr Richardson's family sat in the public gallery. During the short hearing, administration matters were discussed between prosecutor Phil Barnes KC, Jaime Hamilton KC for the defence and Judge Maurice Greene.
A provisional trial date has been set for October 12 this year and is estimated to last for four weeks. Mr Richardson, of no fixed address, was remanded into custody until the next hearing on July 29.
