A World Cup winger's future at the tournament is in doubt after his US visa reportedly expired, leaving his participation in serious jeopardy. Iran's Mehdi Torabi was allegedly issued a single-entry US visa instead of the multiple-entry visas granted to his teammates.
Visa Issue Emerges After Opening Match
The issue came to light following Iran's 2-2 draw with New Zealand in their opening World Cup fixture on June 16 at the Los Angeles Stadium. Torabi, 31, remained an unused substitute. State news agency IRNA reported that his visa expired after the team's trip to Los Angeles for the game.
Urgent Efforts to Resolve
The Iranian Football Federation is working urgently to obtain a new visa so Torabi can continue traveling with the squad. However, he may not be able to travel to the remainder of Iran's group-stage matches. IRNA did not confirm whether Torabi successfully departed the United States with the team, which was ordered out of the country immediately after the match. The agency stated that all members of the Iranian delegation were aboard the flight from the US to Mexico following the match.
No Comment from US Authorities
Neither US authorities nor tournament organizers offered any immediate comment. This development comes amid reported visa difficulties for Iran's delegation during heightened US-Iran tensions.
Iran's Base in Mexico
Iran has established its base in Mexico due to security concerns, traveling in and out of the US for group-stage fixtures. Iranian officials previously stated that about 15 delegation members were refused US visas. IRNA also disclosed that Iran captain Mehdi Taremi and a coaching staff member experienced problems at Los Angeles airport after the draw with New Zealand.
Upcoming Fixtures
Iran is due to meet Belgium in their second Group G fixture on Sunday in Los Angeles, then face Egypt in Seattle on June 26.
