Glasgow Builder Dies After Collapsing on Pavement

A builder has tragically died after collapsing and hitting his head on the pavement while walking to the shops in Glasgow. Ravinder Kumar, 33, had just completed a shift on a construction site on June 11 when he fell. He was airlifted to the Queen Elizabeth University Hospital in a coma and placed on a ventilator after sustaining a severe head injury and internal bleeding.

After two days, his cousin Ravi was informed by hospital doctors that Ravinder would not regain consciousness and could not be saved. Ravi was asked to contact Ravinder's parents in Patiala, Punjab, India, to decide whether to turn off the life-support machine. Speaking to the Record, the 49-year-old cousin said: "It is a decision that no parents should ever have to make."

Family's Heartbreak

Ravinder was the only son of his parents, who were proud of him building a life in Scotland. Ravi described the phone call as harrowing: "They were completely devastated. Through tears they decided the best thing was for him not to suffer and pass away peacefully." The family is still waiting for answers on why Ravinder collapsed. "He was a young man with no underlying health conditions," Ravi added.

Life in Scotland

Ravinder relocated to Scotland in March 2023 and moved in with Ravi while searching for work. He later spent two years in Birmingham, where he began a relationship. After the relationship ended, he returned to Scotland in March and secured a job at a building site. Ravi said: "Ravinder loved Scotland and wanted to settle down here. He had a big future ahead of him."

Ravi has set up a fundraiser to repatriate Ravinder's remains to India and assist with funeral costs. The family plans to bring his body back so his parents can see him one last time before burial.
