Details of the collision

The crash occurred when the front of the 4.40pm departure from Corby to London St Pancras hit the rear of the 3.50pm departure from Nottingham to the same destination. Around 100 people were injured, with 28 remaining in hospital as of Saturday morning, nine of whom were in a critical condition.

Service disruption and recovery

Network Rail believes the crash was a “tragic, isolated incident” and has begun a complex recovery operation to remove damaged trains and carriages. Engineers will assess damage and complete repairs, causing disruption throughout the week. No services will run north of Luton towards Bedford on the Thameslink line, and no EMR services south of Bedford. A limited rail replacement bus service will operate between Luton and Bedford.

Ellie Burrows, Network Rail's regional managing director, said: “While investigations are still at an early stage, current indications are that this was a tragic, isolated incident. We are focused on the safe reopening of the railway and getting services running as quickly as possible. During this time, our message to passengers is clear – please expect disruption to services through this area for the majority of next week and only travel if absolutely necessary.”

Support for those affected

EMR has set up a call line for customers and families directly involved in the crash, staffed by trained colleagues who can help with queries including the return of personal possessions. The number is 0333 212 59 34, open weekdays 7am-8pm, Saturdays 8am-8pm, and Sundays 10am-8pm.
