The RAC has issued a warning to drivers about several Highway Code rules that are frequently forgotten. The breakdown and insurance provider highlighted three common mistakes in a recent Facebook video, urging motorists to pay attention.
Rule 1: Do Not Hold Up Long Queues of Traffic
The RAC explained that many drivers fail to pull over when they are holding up traffic, especially larger or slower vehicles. The Highway Code advises drivers to check mirrors regularly and pull over when safe to let faster traffic pass.
Rule 2: Never Hog the Middle Lane
Mid-lane hogging is a major annoyance for drivers. The RAC stressed that drivers should return to the left-hand lane after overtaking, as per the Code. Staying in the middle or outside lane unnecessarily is against the rules.
Rule 3: Avoid Undertaking
Undertaking, or passing on the left, is generally prohibited. The RAC noted it is only permitted in congested conditions on multi-lane roads when left-lane vehicles move faster than those on the right.
Legal Implications
The RAC reminded drivers that while the Highway Code itself is not law, many rules are backed by law using words like 'MUST' or 'MUST NOT'. Breaking these can lead to fines, prosecution, or disqualification. Other rules can be used as evidence in court to establish liability.
