Motorists have been warned of an overnight closure on the M6 due to major railway works continuing to take place. The northbound carriageway will be shut in Cumbria between junctions 39 and 40 as part of replacements to Clifton Bridge - on the West Coast Main Line.
Clifton bridge is a major railway structure that carries the West Coast Main Line (WCML) over the motorway and links the north of England to Scotland.
National Highways will close the motorway on Sunday (June 14), from 8pm until 5am on Monday. The closure will allow Network Rail to safely remove the temporary safety barrier on the motorway.
Following this work, the speed limit through the roadworks will be 50mph along the full stretch, National Highways said. Speed enforcement cameras will also be removed.
During the closure, a signed diversion will be in place via the A6, with temporary speed reduction measures installed along the route. Motorists have been urged to be aware of the closure, as National Highways apologised for any inconvenience.
Network Rail is replacing the existing 137-metre-long bridge, to 'ensure an increased lifespan of over 120 years' and maintain the safety of the structure. To complete the work, engineers will dismantle the old bridge. The new bridge will then be installed and is being built off-site.
