The Driver and Vehicle Licensing Agency (DVLA) has issued a reminder to motorists to sign up for a free online service that could help them avoid a fine of up to £1,000. The service sends alerts when a vehicle's MOT is due for renewal.
What is an MOT?
An MOT (Ministry of Transport) test is a mandatory annual safety and emissions inspection for most vehicles in the UK that are more than three years old. The check covers essential components such as brakes, lights, tyres, steering, and exhaust systems to ensure they meet legal roadworthiness and environmental standards.
Driving without a valid MOT can result in a penalty of up to £1,000, as stated on GOV.UK. To help drivers avoid missing the deadline, the government offers a free reminder service via text message or email.
How to Sign Up
The DVLA recently urged drivers on social media platform X: "Don't forget to add your vehicles to your Driver and vehicles account. You can then view your vehicle details, including when your MOT expires. Not signed up yet? It's easy."
By registering for an account and MOT reminders, drivers will receive an alert one month before their car, van, or motorcycle MOT expires. For lorries, buses, or large trailers, the notification comes two months in advance.
To register, you will need:
- The vehicle's registration plate (number plate)
- A mobile phone number or email address
The service is available through GOV.UK. After completing a short form on the site, you will receive a link via email or text message that must be clicked to finalise the registration.
Managing or Cancelling MOT Reminders
You can check when your next reminder is due or unsubscribe to stop receiving alerts. You will need the vehicle's number plate and the email address or mobile number you used to sign up.
You must unsubscribe if the vehicle has been sold, transferred, scrapped, written off, or registered as off the road. Alternatively, you can follow the instructions in the text message or click the unsubscribe link in the email.
