If you think theme parks mean drizzle, uninspiring food and mediocre attractions, think again. Universal Studios Florida's Mardi Gras celebration completely transformed my expectations, offering succulent grilled steaks, Chinese dishes and sophisticated cocktails alongside the thrills.
The event, held annually between February and April, transforms the park into a dazzling display of gold, purple and green. Thirteen food and beverage stations are scattered throughout, and most bonus attractions are included with standard park admission.
The nightly Mardi Gras parade (weather permitting) features floats designed by Kern Studios, the same firm behind many iconic New Orleans Mardi Gras floats. Visitors can ride aboard a float and throw beads to crowds below via a virtual queue on the Studios app, with slots released around 2pm and 5pm. The guaranteed route is the Float Ride and Dine Experience, costing $94.99, which includes a three-course meal at a participating restaurant.
For those watching from street level, prime viewing spots include outside The Mummy or The Bourne Stuntacular. A designated children's area opens an hour before the parade near the Brown Derby Hat Shop.
The food offerings showcase authentic Southern and Cajun flavours, proving that theme park fare has moved far beyond boring hot dogs.
