The Guardian has revealed its list of the happiest places to live in Britain, with Berwick-upon-Tweed in Northumberland taking the top spot. The analysis considered factors such as access to nature, community spirit, culture, healthcare, transport, and broadband speeds.
Berwick-upon-Tweed, once called the Alexandria of the north for its historic wealth, is praised for its strong community spirit and well-preserved Elizabethan town walls, which are among the best in Europe. The town's heritage and architecture, including cobbled streets and Spittal beach, were highlighted as key attractions.
The list was compiled using data from the Geographic Data Science Lab at the University of Liverpool, Ofcom, and other sources. Extra weight was given to cultural and community factors, such as proximity to cinemas, theatres, museums, pubs, and libraries. The analysis covered England, Scotland, and Wales.
Other high-scoring locations were not named in the article, but the methodology emphasised easy access to countryside, parks, sea, lakes, and rivers, as well as good healthcare and low crime rates. The Guardian acknowledged that individual preferences may vary and that the list cannot guarantee happiness for every resident.
