The UK government has announced that the long-standing 100ml liquid rule for hand luggage will be scrapped by June 2024, as airports install new 3D scanners. The high-tech equipment, similar to CT scanners used in hospitals, will allow liquids up to two litres and eliminate the need to remove laptops and other electronics from bags.
Transport Secretary Mark Harper stated that the new technology will reduce queue times and improve the passenger experience while enhancing security. The scanners have already been in use at major US airports like Atlanta's Hartsfield-Jackson and Chicago's O'Hare for several years.
The 100ml limit has been in place since November 2006, following a foiled plot to blow up planes using liquid explosives. The government had originally set a 2022 deadline for the upgrade, but it was delayed due to the pandemic. The new rules will be phased in over two years, so passengers are advised to check current rules at their airport.
Christopher Snelling of the Airport Operators Association called the investment a great step forward, making UK air travel easier and more pleasant. The changes are expected to significantly streamline security checks and reduce wait times.
