A travel expert has warned that UK holidaymakers planning trips abroad this summer must make two crucial passport checks that are often overlooked, potentially derailing travel plans. Content creator and travel specialist Kate Donnelly, known as @Thedonnellyedit on social media, reminded travelers that passports must meet specific requirements for 2026 trips. Airport staff may deny boarding if these rules are not followed.
Key Passport Requirements for EU Travel
For those heading to popular European destinations such as Spain, Greece, and Turkey, there are strict rules regarding passport age. Since the UK left the EU and the Brexit transition period ended in January 2021, UK tourists must have passports issued no more than 10 years before the date of entry into EU territory.
Before Brexit, UK citizens could renew passports early and carry over up to nine months of remaining validity from an old passport to a new one. This meant some passports were valid for up to 10 years and nine months. However, the EU no longer recognizes this carry-over time for non-EU nationals. Therefore, a passport is rejected if the issue date on the photo page is more than 10 years ago, even if the expiry date has not yet passed.
Understanding the 10-Year Rule
Kate explained: "For UK passport holders travelling to Europe or the Schengen zone, your passport needs to be less than 10 years old on the date that you enter the country. You also need a minimum of three months validity from the date that you are planning to leave."
The 10-year rule catches many travelers off guard. Before 2018, when renewing a passport, any remaining months were added to the new one. This means some passports obtained right before the Brexit cut-off may have extra months of validity beyond the standard 10 years. Kate advised: "When you're making these checks, you not only need to look at the expiry but also the issue date to make sure there is exactly 10 years between the two."
The only exception when traveling in Europe is Ireland, where the passport simply needs to be valid for the duration of the trip. A free UK passport checker is available online for those unsure about their passport's validity.
Non-European Travel Considerations
For non-European countries, travelers will not be denied boarding based solely on a passport being older than 10 years, as long as it remains within its official expiry date. Most international destinations outside Europe only consider the expiry date, not the issue date. However, many non-European nations require at least six months of validity remaining from the day of arrival or departure. If a passport expires in four months, boarding will be denied.
Additional Travel Advice
In other travel news, budget airline Wizz Air has urged passengers to leave home early and allow extra time to reach the airport this summer due to long queues from the Entry Exit System (EES). However, this advice may not benefit short-haul travelers, as most Wizz Air check-in desks open only two to two and a half hours before departure. Only certain passengers would benefit from arriving three hours early, not the majority.
