A Lancashire village has experienced its second earthquake in less than a month, with residents describing a loud bang and shaking. The British Geological Survey (BGS) confirmed a 2.2 magnitude earthquake struck Silverdale on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 9:35 PM.
Residents Report Loud Noise and Shaking
People in Silverdale and surrounding areas, including Grange-over-Sands and Bolton-le-Sands, reported hearing a big thud and feeling their homes shake. One resident described it as a burst of noise, while another called it a distant explosion. Social media posts captured the surprise, with one user asking if another earthquake had just occurred.
Third Earthquake in Months
This event marks the third earthquake in the area in recent months. On May 13, a 2.3 magnitude earthquake struck, followed by a smaller 0.4 magnitude quake on April 12. Since late 2025, several earthquakes have been recorded in the region, including two in December 2025 and more in February and March 2026.
BGS Provides Details
The BGS released preliminary information on the earthquake, noting its epicenter at 54.168° North, 2.832° West, with a depth of 3 kilometers. The quake was felt across the Morecambe Bay area, with reports of a big thud, like a distant explosion, and a burst of noise. Residents commented on social media, with one saying it was one hell of a bang and another noting their tower shook.
Local resident Sarah Heathcote joked that Silverdale might be the earthquake center of the UK. The BGS continues to monitor seismic activity in the region.
