About Ronda

Ronda is a stunning mountaintop city in the Málaga province of Andalusia, southern Spain. It is renowned for its dramatic position atop the sweeping El Tajo gorge, which divides the city's 15th-century new town from its ancient old town, dating back to Moorish rule.

The iconic Puente Nuevo, a striking stone bridge spanning the gorge, features a viewpoint offering spectacular vistas. The new town's Plaza de Toros, an 18th-century bullring, remains one of the city's most recognisable landmarks. Ronda is widely considered the birthplace of modern bullfighting, with a bullring dating to 1784. While the ring is open to visitors, actual bullfights are rare, with only one symbolic event annually during the Corrida Goyesca in late August.

Beyond its history, Ronda possesses a romantic charm that has captivated poets and writers for centuries, bolstered by its spectacular mountaintop setting. Being compact, everything is easily reachable on foot. Despite being one of Andalusia's most celebrated 'pueblos blancos' (white villages), it has avoided mass tourism that overwhelms coastal neighbours like Malaga.

Visitor Experience

Andrew said: "Ronda is one of those places that simply doesn't need any words to be described, because being there and seeing it for yourself is enough. The content really doesn't do this place any justice for how spectacular it is."

Ronda enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate with hot, dry summers and cool, wet winters. Due to its elevation of about 739 metres, it experiences chillier winters and occasionally hotter summers than coastal resorts. Located just 100km from Malaga, roughly a 90-minute drive, Ronda serves as an ideal day trip or a peaceful base for a Spanish getaway.
