Westminster City Council has fined pedicab riders nearly £5,000 this year as part of a crackdown on noise nuisance. The authority released data showing eight riders were charged a total of £4,792 in the latest enforcement operation.
The council has struggled to regulate pedicabs, which are treated as stage carriages under laws dating back to 1869. This means anyone can buy a pedicab and charge passenger fees without oversight.
Councillor Aicha Less backed calls for the government to give Transport for London (TfL) more enforcement powers. 'We will continue to do everything we can to stop rogue riders ruining the lives of residents and spoiling Westminster for our visitors,' she said.
The council's first pedicab enforcement operation of 2023 focuses on preventing noise nuisance. Ms Less welcomed the fines, saying: 'It is fantastic to hear that last year's progress made by our council officers has continued.'
