Nestled on a bend of the River Coquet in Northumberland, Brinkburn Priory offers a tranquil retreat from modern life. Unlike many former monastic churches that fell into ruin after the dissolution under Henry VIII, this 12th-century priory survived because it also served as a parish church. Today, it stands as a fully formed piece of history, restored in the 19th century and now a Grade I listed building in the care of English Heritage.
Visitors can reach the priory via a scenic woodland trail, leading to spacious grounds perfect for picnics and outdoor activities. The riverside location is so peaceful that lucky visitors might spot an otter snoozing by the water. Inside, the church blends medieval structures with Victorian fittings, including magnificent stained glass windows. Adjacent to the church, a 19th-century manor house built on the site of the original monastic buildings showcases neo-Gothic architecture.
The priory is open to the public through guided tours, with adult admission starting from £5.90. English Heritage members can enter for free. The site also hosts wellness activities such as yoga, tai chi, Pilates, sound baths, and digital detox experiences, and is available for hire for weddings and special occasions. However, it closes throughout winter.
Visitors have praised the site's peaceful atmosphere and helpful staff. One TripAdvisor reviewer described it as 'a brilliant English Heritage site' with beautiful views, while another noted the 'peaceful and tranquil' setting and the impressive stained glass windows. The priory also features a shop and a second-hand bookshop.
