A routine EasyJet flight from the UK to Spain was transformed into a scene of mid-air terror this week when a passenger allegedly 'went berserk', violently assaulting cabin crew and forcing the aircraft into an emergency diversion.
The shocking incident occurred on flight EJU8664, which departed from London Gatwick and was bound for the popular holiday destination of Palma de Mallorca. Chaos erupted at approximately 30,000 feet, sending panic through the cabin.
According to eyewitness accounts, the male passenger became suddenly and uncontrollably aggressive. "He just lost it completely," one shaken traveller reported. "It was terrifying. He started lashing out and screaming, and then he physically attacked the crew who were trying to calm him down."
The flight crew, faced with an escalating security situation and potential danger to everyone on board, had no choice but to declare an emergency. The pilot promptly diverted the Airbus A320 from its course, making a swift descent towards the nearest suitable airport.
Major Security Scramble on the Tarmac
The aircraft touched down at Perpignan–Rivesaltes Airport in southern France, where a major security operation was already waiting on the tarmac. French police and emergency services swiftly boarded the plane to detain the disruptive individual.
Videos and photos from after the landing show a significant police presence surrounding the aircraft on the runway, highlighting the seriousness with which the threat was treated.
The aftermath of the incident caused extensive delays for all passengers. After the individual was removed and taken into custody by authorities, the flight was eventually permitted to continue its journey to Palma, arriving hours behind schedule.
An EasyJet spokesperson confirmed the event, stating: "We can confirm that flight EJU8664 from London Gatwick to Palma diverted to Perpignan due to a disruptive passenger onboard. The aircraft was met by police upon arrival. The safety and wellbeing of our customers and crew is always our highest priority."
This event is a stark reminder of the severe consequences of air rage, which can jeopardise safety and result in significant legal penalties for those involved.
