A transatlantic flight from San Francisco to London Heathrow descended into chaos after a passenger brazenly lit and smoked cannabis in the cabin, forcing the aircraft to make an emergency diversion.
The United Airlines Boeing 777-200, operating as Flight UA901, was approximately two hours into its journey when the illicit act occurred. The pungent smell of marijuana quickly permeated the cabin, causing significant distress and discomfort amongst fellow travellers and crew.
Mid-Air Emergency and Unscheduled Landing
Faced with a escalating situation at 30,000 feet, the flight crew had no choice but to declare an emergency. The pilot diverted the aircraft from its course across the Atlantic, making a beeline for Shannon Airport on the west coast of Ireland.
The plane landed safely at the Irish airport just after 11:30 AM local time. Upon landing, the disruptive passenger was swiftly apprehended by waiting authorities. It is understood the individual was subsequently arrested by An Garda Síochána, the Irish police force, for their reckless actions.
Passenger Backlash and Airline Response
Passengers on board expressed their fury and frustration at the individual whose selfish behaviour caused major delays and anxiety. The incident left the flight grounded at Shannon for several hours as authorities conducted their investigation and the aircraft was refuelled.
In a statement, United Airlines confirmed the diversion, citing a "disruptive customer". The airline apologised to its customers for the significant delay and inconvenience, emphasising that the safety and security of its passengers and crew is its highest priority. The flight eventually continued on its journey to London, arriving hours behind schedule.
This incident highlights the severe consequences of violating strict no-smoking policies on commercial aircraft, which are in place for the safety and comfort of everyone on board.
