Thousands of pounds have been raised for a grieving mother after her 26-year-old son, Ed Burrows, died in a car crash on Kangaroo Island, South Australia. The accident also claimed the life of 55-year-old Craig Doyle, a father and baseball coach from Adelaide.
The crash occurred at around 11.30pm on Wednesday, September 10, when the vehicle rolled over. Local reports suggest the car may have swerved to avoid a kangaroo. The driver, understood to be Mr Doyle's 42-year-old nephew, survived with minor injuries and has been charged with two counts of causing death by careless use of a motor vehicle.
Ed, a car enthusiast from Tunbridge Wells, had been travelling and working at Sea Dragon Lodge, a luxury boutique accommodation set in 250 acres of private bushland, about 7.5 miles from the crash site. Lodge owner Karin Greenslade expressed disbelief, saying, 'We can't grasp it – we are in disbelief. Ed was loving everything on Kangaroo Island, loving life here.'
A GoFundMe page, set up by friends Robert Hardless and Chris Lee to support Ed's mother Fleur Sainsbury, had raised nearly £7,000 at the time of writing. The fundraiser highlighted the travel industry's generosity, aiming to ease the financial burden of repatriation and funeral costs.
Ed had previously worked as a cellar technician at Balfour Winery in Staplehurst, Kent. He had been sharing his Australian adventures on social media before the tragedy.
