Britannia Pier in Great Yarmouth, Norfolk, has been named Pier of the Year by the National Piers Society (NPS), beating 62 other piers across the UK. The award comes as the seaside town prepares for a £40 million regeneration project over the coming years.
Tim Wardley, NPS chairman, said: 'Huge congratulations to the worthiest of winners who have shown that in challenging economic times, investment is still the way forward to success.' The pier, which underwent a £1.8 million refurbishment, is known for its lively atmosphere, traditional arcades, rides, bars, and coastal views.
Joseph Abbott, co-owner of Britannia Pier, said: 'We feel this is a huge testament to us as new owners for the work, time and investment we have put in since our takeover in December 2022.' Admission to the pier is free, though rides and shows have separate costs.
The £40 million revamp of Great Yarmouth includes reopening the Iron Duke art deco pub, which shut in 2007, after a £2.4 million renovation later this year. The 19th century Maritime House, abandoned for five years, will be converted into cafes and flats. The Grade II-listed Victorian Winter Gardens will receive an £18 million makeover, and North Quay will undergo a £20 million transformation into a hub of shops, homes, and leisure venues.
