British families who moved to Australia for a 'better life' are now revealing why they are returning to the UK. Among the top reasons cited are the high cost of living, homesickness, and the desire to be closer to extended family.
Kimberley Lucas, who moved from Scotland to Sydney 16 months ago, initially praised the outdoor lifestyle and family-friendly amenities. However, she now says the expense of everyday life in Australia has become unsustainable. 'The cost of groceries, rent, and utilities is much higher than we expected,' she said in a recent TikTok video.
Another British expat, known as Kezza on TikTok, moved to Brisbane with her husband and son. While her son initially 'excelled' in his new environment, she now cites homesickness as a key factor in their decision to return. 'We miss our families terribly,' she said. 'Video calls aren't the same as being there.'
The desire to be closer to grandparents and other relatives is a common theme among returning families. Clara, who moved to Australia to be with her partner's family, said, 'We want our children to grow up knowing their grandparents properly. That's something you can't replace with sunshine.'
Despite the pull of Australia's warmer climate and outdoor lifestyle, many British families are finding that the emotional and financial costs outweigh the benefits. The trend highlights the challenges of expat life, even in a country often seen as a paradise.
