Wizz Air has confirmed a major change that will affect passengers from 2027 onwards. The budget airline announced on Monday that it will equip all its new-generation aircraft with high-speed internet access provided by Elon Musk's Starlink system.
First European Ultra-Low-Cost Carrier with Starlink
The Hungary-based carrier claims it will be the first ultra-low-cost airline in Europe to adopt Starlink, which uses thousands of satellites in low Earth orbit. The service is already available or planned by several other airlines, including British Airways and Virgin Atlantic.
Wizz Air has not yet confirmed whether passengers will be charged for using the internet. Ian Malin, the airline's chief commercial officer, stated: "Ultra low-cost travel has always been about making opportunities accessible to more people. In 2027, we're taking that philosophy into the space era."
He added: "Our customers shouldn't have to choose between affordable fares and reliable internet onboard to stay connected to the people, work and moments that matter most. We're proud to lead that change by collaborating with Starlink to bring maximum benefit to Wizz Air."
Background: Musk vs. Ryanair
The announcement follows a public dispute in January between Elon Musk and Ryanair CEO Michael O'Leary. O'Leary dismissed the feasibility of using Starlink on Ryanair flights, prompting Musk to call him an "idiot" and a "chimp" on social media, and even suggesting he might buy the airline. O'Leary later claimed the "PR spat" boosted sales by 2-3%.
Wizz Air's move positions it as a leader in affordable connectivity, potentially putting pressure on rivals to follow suit.
