Passengers aboard a Tianjin Airlines flight were left terrified after a power bank overheated and engulfed the cabin with thick smoke. The incident occurred as the aircraft approached its destination, prompting an emergency response.
Incident Details
The power bank began emitting fumes on flight GS7829 from Tianjin to Jieyang on 15 June. The Airbus A320neo took off from Tianjin Binhai International Airport at 6:49 a.m. local time and landed at Jieyang Chaoshan International Airport at 9:17 a.m.
Video footage captured cabin crew scrambling to manage the situation as an announcement alerted passengers: "There is a fire situation in the cabin. We are organising firefighting protocols, please remain calm and do not panic."
Passenger Accounts
One passenger stated: "I didn't notice at first, but then the noise got louder. The smoke was quite thick. There was no open fire, but the smell was very strong."
After a safe landing, passengers were instructed to evacuate without their baggage before briefly returning to retrieve their possessions.
Airline Statement
A Tianjin Airlines spokesperson said: "Crew members discovered it immediately and handled it appropriately according to procedures. No one was injured, there was no damage to aircraft facilities or equipment, and the flight landed safely." They added: "If it is necessary to carry a power bank, please check it carefully to ensure it meets 3C certification and other relevant requirements."
The incident caused a delay of approximately one hour and 12 minutes. No injuries or aircraft damage were reported.
Broader Context
This alarm comes as airlines and aviation authorities worldwide impose stricter rules on power banks following an increase in thermal runaway incidents. Tianjin Airlines currently permits power banks in hand luggage or on one's person but prohibits them in checked baggage.
