Newcastle United are preparing for a significant move in the transfer market, which could reveal manager Eddie Howe's tactical plans for next season. Sporting director Ross Wilson has £69 million to spend following the departure of Anthony Gordon to Barcelona, and the club is actively seeking a replacement.
Transfer Targets and Strategy
Wilson is tasked with finding a new wide attacker, with several names linked to the club, including Osasuna's Victor Munoz and Real Betis' Abde Ezzalzouli, as well as lesser-known prospects like Mathias Fernandez-Pardo. The recruitment team, alongside technical director Sudarshan Gopaladesikan, has drawn up a shortlist, but the key question remains whether Newcastle will seek a like-for-like replacement for Gordon or a player with a different profile.
Tactical Shift Under Howe
Gordon's absence in the final games of the season proved instructive. With Gordon injured or benched, Howe altered his formation from the usual 4-3-3 to a 4-2-3-1 system. Instead of deploying a traditional winger on the left, Howe used Joe Willock, Joelinton, or Jacob Ramsey as an inverted left midfielder, providing midfield solidity while allowing creativity. This tweak reduced defensive vulnerability and created new attacking avenues. Ramsey, in particular, thrived, delivering key assists for Harvey Barnes and William Osula.
Howe explained, "We have changed things around with a view to the future. We are very fluid as a team, not limited to one system. I want us to continually merge into new shapes both on and off the ball." This tactical flexibility could shape summer recruitment. If Newcastle adopts the 4-2-3-1 formation, the focus may shift from a direct Gordon replacement to strengthening other areas, such as a new defensive midfielder to support Sandro Tonali and Bruno Guimaraes, while the left side could be covered by Ramsey, Joelinton, and Barnes.
Despite the tactical change, Howe downplayed its impact on recruitment, stating, "The system change is minimal. In most phases, we are still the same. It doesn't change our recruitment at all." However, with top scorers Alexander Isak and now Gordon departing in successive seasons, Newcastle desperately needs attacking flair and creativity.
Potential Targets and Profiles
The club is monitoring several flexible attackers. Some, like Victor Munoz, are out-and-out wingers, while others, such as Club Brugge's Christos Tzolis, can operate as a No. 10 or out wide. Other targets include teenager Said El Mala from Koln, RB Leipzig's Antonio Nusa, Real Betis' Abde Ezzalzouli, and Mathias Fernandez-Pardo, who can play across the frontline. Bazoumana Toure is a more traditional touchline-hugging forward. This variety suggests Newcastle is open to different profiles as they aim to boost their attacking options for the upcoming season.
