Manchester United have reportedly moved into pole position to secure the signature of Mateus Fernandes this summer. The Portuguese midfielder impressed during West Ham United's challenging campaign and is expected to depart the London Stadium after just one season.
Real Madrid Concede Defeat
Fernandes, 21, only joined West Ham in the previous summer transfer window but has already attracted attention from Europe's elite clubs, including Real Madrid. However, according to The Sun, the Spanish giants have resigned themselves to losing the race, with Fernandes seemingly heading to Old Trafford instead.
United identified Fernandes as a key target early in the transfer window, and despite competition from the record European champions, they appear to have won the battle. West Ham value the Algarve-born ace at £80 million.
Midfield Rebuild Underway
Manchester United are planning a significant midfield overhaul this summer. Brazilian midfielder Ederson is on the verge of joining from Atalanta for a fee reported to be around £40 million. The 26-year-old has impressed in Serie A and was previously linked with Manchester City and Tottenham Hotspur.
Meanwhile, the Red Devils had hoped to lure Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest, but Manchester City have convinced the talented youngster to join them instead, with a fee exceeding £100 million expected.
CEO Confirms Ambitious Plans
United CEO Omar Berrada has outlined the club's aggressive transfer strategy. Speaking to club media, he said: "The template for what we did last summer will be replicated in many ways. You always go into a window. You don't know how you're going to come out of it. But you have to be really prepared. You have to have a clear plan. You have to know exactly what positions you're looking to strengthen. We have to be agile and flexible. But we have a clear plan."
Berrada also highlighted the importance of youth and experience: "Jason Wilcox and his team are very well set up to execute that plan. What we saw last season is a good way forward for us, which is we want to gain some experience in youth. We want to make some players that have demonstrated they can perform in the Premier League and perhaps also with players that are doing very well outside the Premier League. But we will always do it within our terms and ensure that whatever decision we take is not just for the short term but also for the long term."
