A travel blogger has shared an emotional update from a cruise ship struck by a suspected hantavirus outbreak that has claimed three lives and left a British passenger critically ill.
Outbreak on the MV Hondius
The suspected outbreak occurred aboard the MV Hondius, which departed from Ushuaia, Argentina, on March 20 with 149 people on board. Three individuals have died: a Dutch couple and a German national. A 69-year-old British passenger is in critical condition in Johannesburg.
Blogger's Emotional Video
Travel blogger Jake Rosmarin, a passenger on the ship, shared a tearful video on Instagram, expressing the uncertainty and human impact of the outbreak. In the video, he described the fear and anxiety among passengers and crew as they await further news.
Hantavirus is a rare, rodent-borne infection with no specific cure. It can be fatal and typically presents with flu-like symptoms that may progress to severe respiratory or renal syndromes.
Investigation Underway
The World Health Organization is actively investigating the outbreak. Hantavirus has been confirmed in one case, and further laboratory testing and epidemiological studies are ongoing. Health authorities are working to trace contacts and prevent further spread.
