Waitrose has raised the price of its meal deal for the first time since launching the popular lunch option in 2023. The three-item deal now costs £5.50, a 50p increase from the original £5 price point.
Price Hike Details
The 10% rise brings Waitrose in line with other supermarkets that have recently increased meal deal prices. The deal includes a main item such as a sandwich, wrap, or salad, plus a drink and a snack like crisps, fruit, or chocolate. A Waitrose spokesperson defended the increase, stating: "Our meal deal remains exceptional value for money - offering a wide variety of lunch options prepared with the quality ingredients you'd expect from Waitrose."
Industry-Wide Trend
Tesco raised its meal deal to £3.85 for Clubcard holders and £4.25 for non-members last August, while its Premium deal now costs £6 (£5.50 for Clubcard users). Sainsbury's increased its deal to £3.95 last summer, marking the second rise in under a year. Asda offers the cheapest option at £3.74 without a loyalty card, followed by Co-op (£3.75 for members) and Morrisons (£3.75 for More Card holders).
Value for Money?
Despite the increase, Waitrose insists its meal deal offers quality ingredients and high welfare standards. Shoppers seeking the best value may turn to Asda or other budget-friendly alternatives.
