Supermarket own-brand sausages have been named the best you can buy in the UK, according to a new Which? taste test. The consumer watchdog conducted a blind tasting of 10 supermarket own-label sausages alongside branded products from The Jolly Hog and Porky Whites.
Sixty participants rated the sausages on taste, texture, and smell to identify the ultimate banger. Three own-brand options secured the Best Buy accolade, beating big-name competitors.
The Best Sausages
Lidl, Aldi, and Morrisons received the highest scores. Lidl Deluxe Pork Sausages (£2.49 for 400g) achieved 73 per cent for their eating pleasure, moistness, texture, and price. Aldi Specially Selected Pork Sausages scored 72 per cent, described as impressive all-rounders, also priced at £2.49 for 400g. Morrisons' The Best Thick Pork Sausages also scored 72 per cent, priced at £3.25 for 400g, with testers happy with appearance, aroma, and taste.
Asda secured fourth place, with participants noting the meaty flavour and seasoning. At £3.17 for 400g, they offer good value. The Co-Op sausages performed well too, priced at £3.90 for 400g, though some testers desired a stronger taste.
Branded Products Lag Behind
The Jolly Hog and Porky Whites both scored 65 per cent. The Jolly Hog had appealing appearance and aroma, but the taste was deemed too mild and the consistency too coarse. Porky Whites also lacked flavour, with fewer than half satisfied with consistency.
Which? concluded that supermarket own-brand sausages offer excellent quality and value, making them the top choice for British consumers.
