Supermarket Own-Brand Sausages Crowned Best in UK Beating Jolly Hog
Supermarket Own-Brand Sausages Beat Jolly Hog in Taste Test

Supermarket own-brand sausages have been crowned the best in the UK, beating popular brands like Jolly Hog and Porky Whites in a blind taste test conducted by consumer group Which?.

Which? carried out a blind taste test of 10 supermarket own-label sausages, alongside The Jolly Hog and Porky Whites. The trial involved 60 participants who rated the sausages on flavour, texture, and aroma to determine the ultimate banger.

Three own-brand sausages secured Which?'s Best Buy accolade, with Lidl, Aldi, and Morrisons all claiming the coveted title.

Best Supermarket Sausages

Lidl Deluxe Pork Sausages (£2.49 for 400g) achieved a score of 73% for their "eating pleasure", moistness, texture, and price. This compares favourably to the 72% recorded for Aldi Specially Selected Pork Sausages, described as "impressive all-rounders". A 400g pack of Aldi sausages is also priced at £2.49.

Morrisons' The Best Thick Pork Sausages likewise scored 72%, retailing at £3.25 for 400g. Which? noted that the majority of its tasters were "happy" with the appearance, aroma, and flavour of these bangers.

Asda finished in fourth position, with testers praising the well-balanced meaty flavour and seasoning. Two thirds of participants also appreciated the texture. Priced at £3.17 for 400g (79p per 100g), they come in slightly dearer.

The Co-Op sausages also performed well, priced at £3.90 for 400g (98p per 100g). Tasters enjoyed the taste and texture, though some felt they could benefit from a touch more flavour.

In the case of The Jolly Hog and Porky Whites, both branded products failed to reach the top spot. The Jolly Hog looked and smelled good, but the taste was underwhelming and the texture was described as "too coarse". In total, they were awarded a score of 65%.

Porky Whites similarly achieved 65%, with fewer than half of the tasters satisfied with the texture. While visually appealing, they were found to be lacking in flavour.

Overall, the blind taste test highlighted that supermarket own-brand sausages can compete with and even surpass branded alternatives, offering excellent value for money without compromising on quality.
