Manchester United are weighing up a surprise move for Wales goalkeeper Karl Darlow this summer, according to reports. The experienced stopper is out of contract at Leeds United at the end of June and could become available on a free transfer, making him an attractive option as United look to strengthen their goalkeeping department.
According to The Athletic, Darlow has emerged as a candidate for a backup role at Old Trafford, with the club keen to bring in an experienced goalkeeper to provide competition and cover. The 35-year-old enjoyed a strong back end of the campaign, taking over from Lucas Perri as the club's No.1 midway through the season and is highly regarded at Elland Road.
Leeds forced to act
Interest from Manchester United has prompted Leeds into action, with the West Yorkshire club expected to offer Darlow a new contract in an effort to keep hold of him. Darlow, who has won 15 caps for Wales, has now also established himself as Craig Bellamy's first-choice goalkeeper and has enjoyed something of a renaissance over the past 18 months.
United's goalkeeping options
United currently have Senne Lammens as their first-choice goalkeeper, while 40-year-old Tom Heaton last week penned a new one-year contract to remain at Old Trafford. Altay Bayındır and Andre Onana are the other goalkeeping options at the club, with the latter spending last season on loan in Turkey with Trabzonspor.
Darlow's experience and recent form make him a valuable asset, and his potential arrival at Old Trafford would provide healthy competition for the starting spot. However, Leeds are determined to retain his services and will likely table a new deal to fend off United's interest.
