Manchester United are reportedly preparing an offer for Tottenham Hotspur captain Cristian Romero, a player who was forced to apologise to his teammates after being sent off in his last appearance at Old Trafford.
United's Transfer Plans
The Red Devils are expected to be active in the transfer window as manager Michael Carrick prepares for a return to Champions League football in the 2026/27 campaign. According to reports in Argentina, United are hoping to gain the upper hand in the race for Romero, with both Barcelona and Atletico Madrid also said to be interested. The club is reportedly 'preparing an offer' for the centre-back as Carrick looks to revamp his squad.
Romero's Old Trafford Nightmare
Should Romero end up at Old Trafford, he will be eager to erase the memory of his last visit. In February, the 28-year-old was shown a 29th-minute red card for a challenge on Casemiro. United capitalised on the extra man, winning 2-0 through goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes. After the match, then-Spurs boss Thomas Frank revealed that Romero had apologised to his teammates for the sending off, which drew widespread criticism from pundits. Frank said: 'He was sorry for the incident. He apologised to his team-mates in the changing room. I think he's one of the most important players. When he performs at his top, he's driving the team.'
International Link-Up
A move for Romero would see him link up with Argentine teammate Lisandro Martinez at United. Both players are part of the squad for this summer's World Cup in North America, where Argentina will defend their title.
Spurs' Relegation Battle
Romero was also in the headlines before the final Premier League game of the season, when he appeared set to spend Tottenham's final-day relegation decider in Argentina while recovering from injury. However, he backtracked on that decision and was present as Spurs secured safety with a 1-0 win over Everton.
