After comparing sausages from budget supermarkets Aldi and Lidl, one emerged as a clear winner, described by the taster as the best they have ever had. The test aimed to see if cheaper options could rival more expensive packets from stores like Tesco or the Co-op.
The Contenders: Aldi vs Lidl
Aldi's Specially Selected Pork Sausages, priced at £2.99 for six, are described as "blended with herbs and a pinch of ginger." They cooked easily, rendered less fat during frying, and had a crisp skin with a nice flavour. However, the taster noted a slight processed frankfurter taste rather than a traditional pork sausage, though it was still enjoyable.
Lidl's Deluxe Pork Sausages, priced at £2.29 for six, are similarly "blended with herbs and spices." They proved slightly harder to brown evenly, resulting in a charred appearance, and rendered more fat, making them oilier. Despite this, the flavour was bold, juicy, and exactly what one expects from a pork sausage.
The Verdict
Both sausages were considered excellent value for money. However, Lidl was the clear winner. The taster declared, "I thought it was better than the options I’ve tried from other supermarkets as well, and I think I’ll be sticking to Lidl pork sausages from now on."
