Sainsbury's has been crowned the winner in a head-to-head comparison of supermarket picky bits selections, beating Aldi, M&S, Lidl and Asda. The ranking was based on quality, variety and value, with Sainsbury's praised for its extensive range and inclusive dietary options.
Lidl Falls Short on Variety
Lidl came in last place. While its bakery remains a highlight, its picky bits selection was deemed small and uninspiring. The store offered classic items such as a nine-pack of sausage rolls for £1.29, six cheese-and-onion rolls for £1.75, and four pork pies for £1.19. Dips cost £2.49 and olives £1.99. Unique finds included barbecue pork mini rolls (£1.99) and sweetcorn and jalapeno fritters (£1.99), but overall the range was limited and the aisle layout unappealing.
Aldi: Affordable but Limited
Aldi ranked fourth. As a budget supermarket, it matched Lidl on price but offered a slightly better selection. Standouts included sweet chilli houmous (95p), mini pork and pickle pies (£1.89 for six), and a 40-pack of cocktail sausages for £1.99. However, the variety was still less impressive than competitors, making it suitable for quick, affordable picnics but not for larger gatherings.
Asda Impresses with Mix-and-Match Deals
Asda took third place, thanks to its dedicated picky bits section and strong mix-and-match promotions. Shoppers can get any two items for £3.50, such as 10 mini pork pies (£2.15) and 24 cocktail sausages (£2.15), or any three for £7 on olives, dips, cheeses and cured meats. Notable products included pesto mozzarella pearls (£2.98), marinated olives with Greek feta (£2.98), and vintage cheddar and shallot rolls (£2.50). Asda's yellow-label items offer further savings, like eight sausage rolls for 98p. However, the selection was spread across the store, and quality didn't match the top two.
M&S: King of Variety but Pricier
Marks and Spencer came second, known for its extensive and unique picky bits range. Highlights included a fully loaded Mexican-style dip (£3.25), mini feta and cheese pot (£4), Turkish grilled pepperoncini (£4), and Korean-style sticky rice salad (£3). Basic options like colossal Greek-style olives (£4) and a nine-pack of sausage rolls (£2.75) are also available. Deals include three salads for £8, two for £6.50 on cured meats and cheese, and two for £2.50 on dips. Despite the variety, higher prices kept it from the top spot.
Sainsbury's: The Clear Winner
Sainsbury's secured first place for its unbeatable combination of value, variety and inclusivity. The store offers two fully stocked aisles of picky bits, catering to vegan, vegetarian, kosher and halal diets. Examples include Quorn Cocktail Sausages (14 for £2.10), Extra Mature Cheddar & Caramelised Onion Quiche (£4.50), and Giant Cous Cous & Feta Salad (£3.25). Nectar cardholders can buy any three Taste the Difference items for £8, such as Pesto & Parmesan Pasta (£3.25), Salami Riserva Dry Cured (£3.50) and King Prawns, Sunblush Tomatoes & Pesto (£4.50). Sainsbury's also price-matches Aldi on sausage rolls, making it both affordable and diverse.
According to Shania King-Soyza, the reviewer, "Sainsbury's not only offers the largest selection that caters to multiple dietary needs but also offers unique, affordable, and enticing products."
