Long, hot summer weather can leave windows dirty with dust and pollen buildup, but window experts say a cheap vegetable already in your kitchen can leave you with 'crystal clear glass'. Onions contain mild natural acids and sugars that help lift residue from glass, making dirt and insect marks easier to wipe away.
How the Onion Hack Works
During summer months, many homeowners find themselves cleaning windows more often as they are left open more frequently, and increased airflow leads to a buildup of dust, pollen, and grime. Longer daylight hours and bright sunshine make smears and streaks far more noticeable. However, experts say there may be no need to buy specialist cleaning products at all. People can simply cut an onion in half and wipe their windows down with it.
Once the window has been wiped, the onion juices should be cleaned off immediately with a damp cloth, and the glass thoroughly buffed dry with a clean microfibre cloth to achieve a streak-free finish.
Expert Endorsement
Heath Showman, founder of Lifestyle Blinds, said: “People often assume you need expensive cleaning products to get windows sparkling, but the answer could be sitting in your kitchen already. It’s a surprising – yet effective – traditional cleaning hack and it’s really easy to do. Simply slice an onion in half and then rub the cut half on your window, paying extra attention to stubborn dirt. If you let the onion juices sit on the window for around a minute, this can help to loosen residue before wiping the window clean with a damp cloth, and then buffing the glass dry with a microfibre cloth until you’re left with a sparkling streak-free window.”
Practical Tips and Limitations
Showman added: “While an onion won’t replace a thorough window clean, it’s a handy low-cost alternative to help remove everyday marks and keep glass looking clearer between deep cleans.” This natural method provides a low-cost, natural alternative to expensive and potentially damaging chemical cleaners. For best results, use a fresh onion each time and ensure the glass is buffed thoroughly to avoid any residual smell.
