Samantha Bartlett, Assistant Editor of Social News, visited Lordington Lavender Farm in West Sussex, a picturesque working farm that could easily be mistaken for the famed lavender fields of Provence in France. Located in the South Downs National Park near Chichester, the farm offers a stunning purple landscape during its brief July open season.
A Family-Run Farm with a Conservation Ethos
Founded in 2002 by local farmer Andrew Elms after he transitioned from dairy farming, Lordington Lavender Farm spans 10 acres of French Maillette lavender, a variety highly prized for its essential oil quality. The farm operates with a strict no-chemical policy, using no fertilisers or pesticides, making it a haven for bees, butterflies, and over 12 red-listed bird species.
Visitors are welcome only during a short window in July when the lavender is at its peak purple bloom. This weekend, July 18-19, marks the final open days for the season, so interested attendees must act quickly.
Family-Friendly Activities and Attractions
Bartlett visited with her young son, who enjoyed running through the lavender rows and spotting butterflies. The farm offers numerous photo opportunities, including an egg chair, toy tractor, and a table and chairs set. A tractor ride from the car park to the farm is a highlight for children.
Educational talks about lavender are available, along with a 'Hay Play' zone featuring small slides, bowling, and tin cans. A new maize maze adds to the fun. During Bartlett's visit, alpacas, lambs, and Pygmy goats were present, though they will not be there this coming weekend.
Refreshments and Souvenirs
Despite the sunny outdoor setting, ample shade and refreshments are available, including cakes, lavender-flavoured ice cream, fresh strawberries, and Pimm's. The farm shop sells pure steam-distilled essential oils, natural soaps, and potted lavender plants.
Bartlett concluded, "All in all, we enjoyed a wonderful day out in a distinctive setting that I'm confident my little one will cherish for years ahead, so I'd strongly suggest heading down for a visit if you're available this weekend."
