Keir Starmer Backs Pavement Pints for World Cup to Boost Pubs
Keir Starmer Backs Pavement Pints for World Cup Pub Boost

Prime Minister Keir Starmer has backed a proposal to allow pubs to serve 'pavement pints' throughout the World Cup, aiming to give a much-needed boost to England's hospitality sector. The government has also confirmed that beer gardens will be permitted to host special match screenings during evening hours, with local councils instructed to cut red tape to support venues during the tournament, which begins on Thursday.

Pubs are expected to sell millions of additional pints, providing a significant financial lifeline for establishments that have been struggling. Starmer told The Sun: 'Nothing brings us all together like a World Cup summer and cheering on England in a packed pub with everyone glued to the game. Red tape should not get in the way of fans enjoying the game with friends and local pubs doing a great trade too.' He added: 'A pavement pint in the sunshine discussing the agony of penalties and soaking up the atmosphere is what pubs are all about and we are backing them.'

New Guidance for Outdoor Service

The new guidance aims to simplify outdoor food and drink service for pubs. Venues have already been informed they can open late for all World Cup knockout rounds, as well as every match involving England and Scotland, according to the Mirror.

Communities Secretary Steve Reed has directed councils to approve all applications from pubs seeking extended hours and outdoor service. He stated: 'The last thing any of us want to see is people being turfed indoors halfway through penalties. So let us show the fun police the red card, get behind England and back our pubs. This time, it really could be coming home.'

Expected Economic Impact

If England reaches the final, licensed premises are projected to pour a staggering 55 million additional pints. For individual establishments nationwide, this equates to an average of 1,240 extra pints or 14 additional kegs throughout the tournament.

The Mirror has long championed the sector through its 'Your Pub Needs You' campaign. With many pubs having closed in recent years, landlords and licensees are counting on England captain Harry Kane and the team to deliver a desperately needed boost.
