A couple in Boise, Idaho, has sparked debate after charging guests to attend their wedding, ultimately making a $132,000 profit. Jaxx and Larsen were shocked by wedding costs, including a venue that quoted $650 just for cake-cutting, so they asked friends and family to pay if they wanted to come.
Despite the unconventional approach, nearly 300 people attended, many of whom were strangers from the internet. A VIP ticket costing $1,000 gave access to a package of events, including a rehearsal dinner and a 'biohacking brunch', while a cheaper $57 ticket allowed entry to the Friday afternoon ceremony and reception.
The couple covered the $50,000 cost of the wedding and donated the profit to a charity providing community-led education in rural Kenya. They described their actions as 'disrupting' the multibillion-dollar wedding industry.
The trend appears to be catching on, with a startup in Paris developing an app that allows couples to sell tickets to their wedding to strangers to cover costs.
