Costco has announced that its custom cake ordering service will move online after a viral mishap where a customer's instructions were misinterpreted. The discount retailer previously offered a 48-hour service for personalised cakes, but the recent blunder has prompted a shift to digital ordering to improve clarity.
The incident involved a shopper who requested a minimalistic design with 'no writing' and 'no designs', but asked for red frosting on the perimeter. The bakery instead iced the customer's diagram onto the cake, leading to a humorous result that was shared on Reddit, garnering over 109,000 upvotes.
Costco's custom cakes serve 48 people and cost £16.49, with options including various designs and fillings. The new online system aims to prevent similar misunderstandings by allowing customers to submit detailed requests digitally.
A Costco spokesperson said the change was driven by customer feedback, ensuring orders are fulfilled accurately. The service will be available at stores including Trafford Park and Oldham.
