Janet Street-Porter's Secret Wedding: Heartbreaking Reason Revealed

Janet Street-Porter Opens Up About Secret Fifth Wedding on Loose Women

Janet Street-Porter has disclosed a deeply personal and heartbreaking reason for choosing to keep her recent wedding a closely guarded secret. The Loose Women panellist, who announced her marriage to long-term partner Peter last week, returned to the ITV show to share intimate details about her decision to walk down the aisle for the fifth time.

Nerves and Past Regrets Fuel Secret Ceremony

During her appearance, Janet confessed to being overwhelmed with anxiety in the lead-up to the ceremony. "I was nervous. I got myself in a complete state the day before. I was shaking," she revealed. Her apprehension stemmed from a previous marital misstep that left lasting scars. "I'd messed up the last one. That was a really, really bad mistake. It was bad for my friends. It was bad for me. I don't know about him, but it was a horrible, horrible, stupid mistake, and I didn't want to do that again," she explained, highlighting her desire to avoid repeating past errors.

Intimate Setting and Emotional Challenges

The wedding was an intimate affair, with only two friends serving as witnesses and two others joining at the last minute. Janet emphasised her wish to make the day special for Peter, who was marrying for the first time. "I didn't want to do anything embarrassing that I would regret. I didn't want to make fun of Peter. I wanted it to be lovely for him, because he hasn't been married before. He's managed to avoid it," she said.

A significant emotional hurdle was the requirement to use her previous married name during the ceremony, a detail that still causes her distress. "I had to be married in my last married name, which I don't really want to say on air, because it still upsets me so much. But nobody spotted it," Janet shared. The couple found solace in the privacy of the registry office, which was empty and allowed for a quick, ten-minute ceremony. "When we got to the registry office, there was no one there in the car park. It was brilliant. It was empty. We went in and there was this great big room with chairs for like 100 people. It was all over in 10 minutes. We are absolutely thrilled," she recounted.

Announcement and Relationship History

Janet first broke the news of her marriage in a video message on Loose Women last week, stating, "Hi everyone, I've been keeping a big secret, it’s my big news for everyone that's watching ... Peter and me got married on Saturday. So there you are. I finally did it. I saved the best till last." The couple has been together since 1999. Janet's marital history includes marriages to Tim Street-Porter in 1967, English publisher Tony Elliot, documentary filmmaker Frank Cvitanovich, and David Sorkin, from whom she split in 1999.
