Windows often need a thorough clean in spring, as sunshine reveals grime and rain marks from winter. Pollen, an extremely sticky substance, creates a hazy film on glass. When mixed with water, it forms a thick coating that is difficult to remove. However, Melody Joy, a DIY expert and founder of Joyelick, has shared that cornflour is one of the most effective techniques for cleaning windows.
Why Use Cornflour to Clean Windows?
Commercial cleaning products often leave streaks, making windows look dark and dreary. Streaks block light and can accumulate into persistent stains. Cornflour is highly absorbent, helping cleaning solutions dry quickly and preventing unattractive streaks. It is also fine and abrasive, effectively tackling stubborn residues like pollen without scrubbing or damaging glass. Note that cornflour should be combined with other natural agents like white vinegar or rubbing alcohol to avoid staining.
How to Deep Clean Windows in Spring
You will need:
- 240ml white vinegar
- 120ml rubbing alcohol
- One tablespoon cornflour
- Around 500ml water
Rubbing alcohol removes greasy residues such as fingerprints and cooking grime. Vinegar, being acidic, breaks down mineral deposits from rainwater stains.
Method
Use an empty spray bottle. Pour all ingredients into the bottle using a funnel, fasten the lid, and shake vigorously. Cornflour settles at the bottom, so shake well before each use. Spray the solution generously onto the window and wipe with a cloth. Marks lift quickly, and windows become sparkling and streak-free in just five minutes.
