In a recent taste test for the Daily Express, I sampled own-brand peanut butter from four local supermarkets, ranking them on smell, texture, and flavour. Peanut butter is a staple in my diet, and I consider myself quite knowledgeable about what makes a good peanut product. So, I visited the nearest supermarkets—Co-op, Sainsbury's, Tesco, and Marks and Spencer—and tried each own-brand version plain, using a teaspoon to assess flavour, aftertaste, mouthfeel, and overall enjoyment. Prices were similar, ranging from £1.40 to £1.55. I allocated 5 points each for smell and texture, and flavour out of ten. Here are the results.
4. Tesco – Price: £1.45
Tesco has performed well in previous taste tests, but unfortunately not this time. The smell was unappetising, though not terrible. The texture was somewhat grainy, and the flavour was overly sweet, almost sugary. Tesco did not win this round.
Smell: 2/5
Texture: 2/5
Flavour: 4/10
Final score: 8/20
3. Co-op – Price: £1.55
Co-op has won previous tests, like for baked beans, but not here. The smell was less appealing compared to others, and the texture wasn't as smooth as the top two. The taste lacked richness and had a bitter aftertaste. It's also the most expensive jar.
Smell: 3/5
Texture: 3/5
Flavour: 7/10
Final score: 13/20
2. Sainsbury's – Price: £1.40
Sainsbury's, joint cheapest with the winner, edged ahead of Co-op. The smell was appetising but not exceptional. Texture was smooth, though slightly spongy compared to the winner. Flavour was decent but not standout.
Smell: 3/5
Texture: 4/5
Flavour: 7/10
Final score: 14/20
1. M&S – Price: £1.40
M&S was the clear winner. The smell was divine, texture perfectly balanced between thick smoothness and softness, and flavour was perfect. The mouthfeel was amazing, with an instant nutty hit and a gorgeous aftertaste.
Smell: 4/5
Texture: 5/5
Flavour: 10/10
Final score: 19/20
