Best supermarket tofu taste test: Cauldron tops the list

A taste test of supermarket tofu has revealed Cauldron Organic Firm Tofu as the best overall, praised for its dense bite and excellent performance when fried. The block, made with 57% EU-grown organic soya, offers high protein content and is described as 'astonishingly good value'. It scored five stars out of five.

The test, conducted by a food critic, evaluated each tofu cold from the packet, then boiled and fried without seasoning. The Tofoo Company Organic Extra Firm Tofu came a close second, noted for its clean flavour and thick crust when fried. It is made with 35.8% organic soya from EU and non-EU sources.

Clearspring Organic Tofu was highlighted as the best for frying, with a uniform block that forms a consistent golden crust. Handmade in Devon since 1984, it holds a Taste of the West Gold award. Meanwhile, The Tofoo Company Organic Smoked Tofu was described as a bold, characterful choice with a deep umami aroma.

At the lower end, Asda Organic Tofu was criticised for its soft texture and poor frying performance, while Tesco Value Tofu was the only non-organic product tested and had the lowest soya content at 16%. The test concluded that organic tofus are GMO-free by definition, and that frying performance varies significantly between brands.
