Which? put supermarket sausages to the test, and three own-brand bangers have been crowned the best you can buy. Consumer group Which? conducted a blind taste test of 10 supermarket own-label sausages, alongside The Jolly Hog and Porky Whites.
The test saw 60 participants rating the sausages on flavour, texture and aroma in a bid to crown the ultimate banger. Three "brilliant" sausages clinched the consumer group's Best Buy award, and the best part is, they're all own-brand.
Best Supermarket Sausages
Supermarket own brands came out on top. Lidl, Aldi and Morrisons all walked away with top honours.
Lidl Deluxe Pork Sausages (£2.49 for 400g) achieved a score of 73 per cent for "eating pleasure", moistness, texture and value for money. This edges ahead of the 72 per cent recorded for Aldi Specially Selected Pork Sausages, hailed as "impressive all-rounders". A 400g pack also retails at £2.49.
Morrisons' The Best Thick Pork Sausages likewise scored 72 per cent, priced at £3.25 for 400g. Which? noted that the majority of tasters were "happy" with the appearance, aroma and flavour of these bangers.
Asda came in fourth place, with testers praising the meaty flavour and seasoning as spot on. Two thirds of participants were also won over by the texture. Priced at £3.17 for 400g (79p per 100g), they are marginally more expensive.
The Co-Op sausages performed well too, coming in at £3.90 for 400g (98p per 100g). Tasters enjoyed the taste and texture, though some felt they could have done with a touch more flavour.
When it came to The Jolly Hog and Porky Whites, both branded options failed to reach the top spot. The Jolly Hog had an appealing appearance and aroma but the taste was deemed too mild and the texture labelled as "too coarse". Overall, they were awarded a score of 65 per cent.
Porky Whites also received 65 per cent, with fewer than half of the testers satisfied with the texture. They had a good appearance, but lacked flavour.
