A self-proclaimed coffee addict has sampled instant coffees from seven leading supermarkets to see how they compare with Nescafé. The taste test pitted budget-friendly options against the household name, with surprising results.
Morrisons Full Roast was rich but had a bitter edge that detracted from enjoyment. Tesco's classic instant was acidic with a strong aftertaste, while Asda's full-bodied brew lacked richness and was slightly watery. Lidl's coffee was smooth and affordable but not as strong as some rivals.
Aldi's offering matched Lidl's price but tasted markedly richer, with a satisfying aroma and body. Sainsbury's impressed with strength and smooth flavour. However, Nescafé Original was pleasantly strong and warming, with an inviting aroma.
The winner was Marks and Spencer's Rich and Smooth, which delivered full flavour with a pleasant acidic bite and satisfying body. The reporter ranked it even higher than Nescafé, despite being a supermarket own-brand.
