Aldi's History in the UK

Aldi opened its first UK store in Stechford, Birmingham in 1990, introducing a no-frills German discount model. Initially met with scepticism, the chain has grown into the UK's fourth-largest supermarket by market share. In its early years, Aldi operated with a limited range of around 600 core lines and simple advertising. The retailer did not use barcodes for its first 11 years, requiring staff to memorise prices. Expansion beyond the Midlands began in the 1990s, with stores in Scotland and London. During the 2000s, Aldi tailored its offering to British shoppers, including the launch of its popular 'Specialbuys' middle aisle.
