Cheese and tomato pizza is a popular dinner option in the UK, often served with garlic bread or a fresh salad. While homemade or restaurant pizzas are hard to beat, supermarket options have improved significantly. With that in mind, I tested five different cheese and tomato pizzas from Aldi — both fresh and frozen, across a range of prices — to find out which one tasted the best.
The Rankings
5. Everyday Essentials Cheese & Tomato Pizza (58p for 114g or 99p for 293g)
Score: 2/5
This pizza is essentially a bread base with tomato paste and a thin layer of cheese. It wasn't terrible; the cheese was salty and sharp, and the tomato paste had a nice sweetness. However, the base was soft and floppy, reminiscent of school dinners. It's edible but would benefit from extra toppings like ham, sundried tomatoes, or Marmite.
4. Takeaway Classic Crust The Big Cheese Pizza (£2.49 for 531g)
Score: 3/5
This pizza tasted like something from a major delivery chain — sweet sauce, thick cheese layer, and a chunky, crispy crust. However, it was one-note, lacking garlic, basil, or oregano. The cheese dried out quickly once cooled. The crust was a highlight, crunchy and perfect for dipping.
3. Stonebaked Margherita Pizza (£1.99 for 305g)
Score: 3.5/5
My usual go-to, this pizza cooks in about 12 minutes and delivers a classic margherita. The sauce is herby and garlicky, and the cheese stretches nicely. The tomato sauce reaches the edge, ensuring flavour in every bite. The downside: the base can get soggy, causing toppings to slide. I recommend cooking it a bit longer or at a higher temperature.
2. Specially Selected Mozzarella & Slow Roasted Tomato Wood Fired Sourdough Pizza (£2.89 for 210g)
Score: 4/5
This single-serving pizza from Aldi's premium range impressed with its mozzarella, slow-roasted tomatoes, and basil pesto. The base, made with 00 flour and a 30-hour slow ferment, was crisp with a slight char, mimicking a pizzeria style. However, the topping distribution was uneven — some bites had little cheese, others were overloaded. At £2.89 for a small pizza, consistency could be better.
1. Carlos Stonebaked Sourdough Mozzarella Pizza (£2.49 for 355g)
Score: 4.5/5
This frozen pizza was the surprise winner. It features a rich tomato sauce, creamy mozzarella, a spinach and basil sauce, and diced tomatoes. The sauce was garlicky and herby, with the extra tomatoes adding depth. The basil and spinach sauce brought freshness without overpowering. The sourdough base was crispy, chewy, and well seasoned. The only drawback: the cooking time was longer than stated — 20 minutes instead of 12 — to achieve proper melt and crispness.
The Verdict
The frozen Carlos Stonebaked Sourdough Mozzarella Pizza came out on top, offering great value at £2.49. For a smaller, more premium option, the Specially Selected Mozzarella and Slow Roasted Tomato Wood Fired Sourdough Pizza is worth trying. On a budget, the Stonebaked Margherita Pizza for under £2 is a solid choice.
