4 in 10 Brits Say 90s Nights Out Were Better

Four in 10 Britons believe the golden age of nightlife is behind them, with the 1990s being hailed as the best decade for a night out, according to a new poll. The survey of 2,000 adults found that 57% think nights out are not what they used to be, with rising costs and mobile phone usage largely to blame.

Rising Costs and Phones Blamed

Rising costs (68%) and mobile phone use (38%) were cited as the main factors ruining the magic of a night out. Only 16% of Gen Z and 13% of Millennials are passionate about clubbing today, yet 72% said they would have loved to experience a 1990s night out.

Why the 90s Were Better

Respondents attributed the appeal of 90s nights to better music (54%), improved atmosphere (56%), and affordability (54%). Among those who clubbed in the 90s, 73% said there was a unique energy that younger generations would not understand.

A spokesperson for Crumpton Oaks, which commissioned the research, said: "There's a clear sense that the classic night out has changed, with many people feeling it is missing something that existed in the 1990s. For those who remember earlier decades, there's a strong attachment to how simple and social those nights felt."

Cost and Spontaneity

Rising prices have stripped away spontaneity for 67% of Brits. Over half (51%) think drinks are too pricey, 36% find entry fees too steep, and 36% say transport costs are too high. Consequently, 72% have not visited a nightclub in the past year.

Music and DJs

Throwback classics (41%), pop (34%), and rock (24%) are the most popular music choices for a night out. Additionally, 81% said the quality of the DJ significantly impacts their enjoyment.

The Crumpton Oaks spokesperson added: "Rising costs are clearly having a knock-on effect, with fewer people going out regularly and spontaneity becoming harder to justify. While music and DJs remain central to a good night, the overall experience is changing."
